Treatment for Sleep Apnea

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, there are different treatment options depending on the severity. Treatment can be basic such as behavioral - patients are instructed to lose weight, stop smoking, or sleep on their sides instead of their back. Treatment can also include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or oral appliance therapy, which positions the mouth in such a way that prevents throat blockage. In more severe cases, surgery may be the best option.

Oral Appliance Therapy

What is Oral Appliance Therapy and how does it work to treat obstructive sleep apnea?

Oral appliance therapy (OAT) is an effective, non-invasive treatment option for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that fits easily into your lifestyle. It uses a mouthguard-like device worn while you sleep to keep your jaw in the best position and prevents your tongue from blocking your airway so you can breathe easily. Whether you snore or have OSA, this can help to relieve your symptoms.

Many types of oral appliances are available and Dr. Babin will work with you to design and custom-fit the perfect appliance for your needs. Each patient has individual needs and our custom designs help us deliver maximum comfort and symptom relief.

Ordering An Oral Appliance

How do I order an oral appliance?

If you and your doctor decide that an oral device is the best treatment option, you will have an evaluation at our office. Dr. Babin will decide if you are a candidate for this treatment. You will then have a digital scan completed to make a model of your teeth and have your jaw positioned at the correct starting point. Your customized device will be made and you will return to ensure a proper fit and receive instructions on proper use and care. You will also be fitted for a morning aligner to reposition your bite after the appliance is removed each morning. Occasionally you will come back to our office for adjustments to optimize care. Once you have become comfortable using your device, it is recommended to have another sleep test to see how the appliance is working for you and if further adjustments may be necessary.

Benefits Of Oral Therapy

Patients like oral appliances because they are comfortable, quiet and easy to wear. They are portable and convenient for travel while also being easy to clean.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is the traditionally prescribed treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. It involves sleeping with a facemark connected by tubing to a constantly running machine. Although CPAP is effective, up to half of the patients don’t comply with treatment.
